The editors of the journal ArteActa are pleased to announce the call for papers for their thematic issue for 2021: The nineties in Central and Eastern Europe.
The last decade of the 20th century heralded a major turning point in the field of performative art. Regime changes in the former Eastern Bloc created conditions which artists and cultural representatives needed to deal with creatively, and the transformations of the 1990s not only affected performative art in the realm of organization, but aesthetically as well.
On the one hand, this change has led to a transformation of traditional cultural networks and institutions as well as the means of creating works of art themselves. Independent artists, as well as artists who were able to successfully commercialize their own artwork, appeared and, after a long period, artists from Central and Eastern Europe finally came into contact with contemporary artistic and cultural trends abroad. On the other hand, they had to cope with the turbulent transformation of society for which they were creating, as well as for the conceptions and demands of contemporary art. Last, but not least, the 1990s were characterized by the intense search for a new aesthetic language, a search which moved from an idealistic return to a “golden age” of a particular national culture to the rejection of forms of then-contemporary art and setting off in the direction of radical aesthetics.
For this thematic issue of the journal ArteActa, we are looking for scholarly studies which explore the forms and foundations of performative art (audiovisual field, theatre, music, dance, and new performative media) in various lands of the former Eastern Bloc. Upon the editors’ agreement, we will also accept proposals for texts which grapple with the given themes in an essayistic manner.
