"It's a question of adaptation," they say in French—and surely in other languages as well—meaning: "Do what you want, it's up to you, adjust to the circumstances, adapt." This friendly instruction, useful for understanding the concept of adaptation in its literal, literary, and theatrical sense, is the key to the following essay. This artistic-research contribution offers one possible approach to the phenomenon of theatrical adaptation. This often requires a certain amount of imagination when we test it and perceive it through directing and acting techniques. Adaptation cannot do without at least a basic knowledge of the staging practices of the last two centuries in Europe – and especially those of the last twenty years. The artistic-research essay is based on practice, specifically on the author's own novel (Poem yourself, Poème toi-même), and subsequently presents the author's adaptation of one of its chapters.
